It could be mental or physical but in any case you are carrying out an activity or series of activities to achieve something.
Some people like the laid back life. They like to wake up and just chill all day everyday. There are others who feel the need to hustle morning till night and don’t feel comfortable lying down and doing nothing, even if they have all their needs met. Then there are those in-between. Some days/times they are laid back and other times, they move. What category are you part of?
You would often find people doing work because they want to get to the end point of the work but at other times it’s also because the person enjoys the process of getting work done. Gardening for example. You may find someone who enjoys not just seeing a beautiful flower bed but actually enjoys the process of developing and caring for a growing garden.
Sometimes work is necessary whether it’s something you enjoy or not. You may not like to cook but the knowledge of the fact that it’s often safer and healthier and cost effective to cook and eat home made meals may make you still go ahead to cook it, whether you enjoy it or not.
So I wonder does the type of work we allow ourselves frequently engage in fall on a spectrum?
Smart or restful work
Lazy work is when you don’t exactly apply yourself and you expect to be rewarded. In this age of social media where it looks like people blink and money just flows into their account, people may be tempted to consistently look towards doing nothing or little and earning big bucks. There’s the illusion that people have, where they think it’s okay to do little to nothing and earn well. I am not talking of working smart, I am talking of lazy work. While we may look to others for inspiration let’s remember that our paths are different and also remember that we don’t always know the background and continuing work that each person is doing to succeed. Work well where you are, until you get a calling from God to move.
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.”
Ecclesiastes 9:10 NIV
Smart or restful work. Restful work understands that to be productive and creative, you must take breaks and rest in between work It’s work that emanates from a place of rest and grace. So you are giving your all but you are not ignorant of the fact that God is the one who gives victory. This realization makes you work and take necessary breaks and rests and holidays. In fact these breaks are needed for you to recharge and create. So I encourage restful work. Trust in God, give in your best and take breaks. Mental health is important.
“I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.”
Ecclesiastes 9:11 NIV
Depressing work is when you push yourself over the limit to the detriment of your mind. Excessive or depressing work I feel is akin to consuming yourself with work and not purpose. So for whatever reason, you have sold yourself to the hustle and forgotten to give your mind and body the needed rest to rejuvenate. It may be self pressure or some underlying problem or the desire to belong to an elite class. Whatever the case, we must check and continuously review our motivations so that we don’t end up working and not enjoying the fruits there of.
“I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”
Ecclesiastes 1:14 NIV
So this week I encourage you to work but do it with rest, trusting in God.
